Three games, one idea
All three are games of dice thrown in a studio and read on camera. They differ in how many dice are used, how many rolls decide a bet, and how many bet options you face.
The live dice family
| Game | Dice | How a bet settles | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Craps | Two | Some bets need several rolls | This page |
| Sic Bo | Three | Every bet settles on one roll | Super Sic Bo |
| Bac Bo | Two per side | Player versus Banker, one roll each | Bac Bo |
Craps basics
Craps looks complicated because the table has many bets, but you only need one to play. Under standard rules, the round starts with a "come out" roll. The help panel has the exact rules for each table.
- On the come out, a 7 or 11 wins a Pass Line bet. A 2, 3 or 12 loses it.
- Any other total becomes the "point".
- The dice keep rolling. If the point comes again before a 7, Pass Line wins. If a 7 comes first, it loses.
Don't Pass is roughly the opposite bet. Outside guides quote a low edge for both under standard rules, around 1.4%, while many of the one-roll bets in the middle of the table, such as "any seven", are priced far higher.
Odds bets
In land-based craps, once a point is set you can add an "odds" bet behind your Pass Line bet, which in standard rules pays at true odds with no edge. Whether a live table offers it, and how much you can add, is shown in that table's help panel. If it's offered, it lowers the overall edge on your combined bet.
Reading the craps layout
The table has three zones. The Pass and Don't Pass lines run around the edge. Come and Don't Come work the same way but start on any roll after the point is set. Place bets let you pick a single number to come before a 7, with different payouts per number. The center holds the proposition bets, the one-roll long shots. Read each zone's payouts in the help panel once, then stick to the edge of the table.
Sic Bo basics
Sic Bo uses three dice. In classic rules, you can bet on Small (a total of 4 to 10) or Big (11 to 17), on a specific total, on single numbers appearing, or on triples. Small and Big lose if any triple lands, which is where their edge comes from. Totals and triples pay much more and lose much more often. Our Super Sic Bo guide covers the multiplier version.
Bac Bo basics
Bac Bo takes baccarat and swaps cards for dice. In the usual format, each side rolls two dice and the higher total wins. It's quick and needs no knowledge of drawing rules. See Bac Bo for how ties are handled.
Where the edge sits
Cheaper and pricier bets, standard rules
| Game | Cheaper bets | Pricier bets |
|---|---|---|
| Craps | Pass, Don't Pass, odds where offered | One-roll center bets |
| Sic Bo | Small or Big | Specific triples and totals |
| Bac Bo | Player or Banker | Tie and side bets |
Exact figures depend on each table's payouts, so use the help panel rather than an outside chart.
A worked example
Invented numbers. You bet 5 on Pass Line for 60 rounds. At the commonly quoted 1.4%, your expected cost is around 4.20 across 300 wagered. Betting 5 on "any seven" for 60 rolls at a much higher edge costs several times more on average, and you'd lose most of those rolls. The game is the same; the bet choice changes everything.
Try live craps for the first time
- Open a craps table and read the help panel.
- Place a Pass Line bet before the come out roll.
- Watch the point get set, or the bet settle at once.
- Wait for the point or a 7.
- Ignore the center bets until you know their cost.
Pace
Craps rounds can take several rolls, so your bet stays in play longer. Sic Bo and Bac Bo settle every round, which makes them faster. More rounds per hour raise your cost per hour at the same stake.
Myths
Streaks, lucky shooters and "due" numbers don't predict anything. Each roll is independent, and no way of betting changes that.
Which to pick
Choose craps if you enjoy a game with a story to each round. Choose Sic Bo for simple one-roll bets. Choose Bac Bo for the fastest, simplest experience. For something with no dice at all, try live roulette or the live casino hub.
